Tulip Festival!

The Tulip Festival is a huge event in Orange City (about 20 minutes away) celebrating all things Dutch.  Here are a few of the highlights during our initiation today:
Dutch costumes!  Everywhere!  Dutch dancing!  Street washing!  People speaking Dutch!  Dutch food!
The boys both rode on a Ferris Wheel today for the very first time.  They were extremely brave!
We watched a parade with floats celebrating Dutch icons and history, marching bands, local celebrities, and tractors.

 Chillin' on the playground.

What kinda crazy instrument is this, anyway?
Our Dutch baby with his blue eyes.
Watching a demonstration on wooden shoe-making.

Oh.  And there were some tulips.  We didn't take pictures of those.

What a great day!

This One

A lot of people have been asking how Kai is doing these days, and I tell them honestly, he's doing great.  We've never experienced a colicky, fussy baby, or had to deal with milk or other food allergies.  We thought *surely* it was our turn to deal with one of these common issues, and yet Kai remains a laid-back, happy, sleep-loving baby, and for this we are extremely thankful.

Kai started sleeping 8-9 hours a night when he was 6 weeks old.  We thought it was a fluke, but he's still sleeping through the night at almost 10 weeks old, which makes for one very happy mom and dad.  I wish I could attribute it to some amazing parenting skill that we possess, but I think it's just pure, dumb, luck.
Ok, you can hate us now.

We are truly loving being parents to this little guy, and Caleb and Sam are really enjoying being his big brother.

Easter

My constant mantra these days is: "Give the baby some SPACE!"  You can see why.

Caleb and Sam are on a puzzle kick. They finished this 300 piece puzzle in one afternoon.

Only In Iowa

I think I am going to start a collection of stories titled "Only in Iowa..."  Here's the first:

Our sweet bunny Chewy has turned aggressive.  I'm not exactly sure of the reason--it could be that we don't play with him enough, or it could be that he doesn't like Iowa winters, or it could be because he is an un-neutered male (as opposed to a neutered female, which is what we were told by the previous owner) and that as he reaches two years of age, he has become more, shall we say, sexually frustrated.

Whatever the reason, he has started biting the boys and I, and none of us really feel like spending all that much time with him.  So I somewhat sheepishly put up an ad on craigslist for our bunny after only 6 months of owning him.

I was contacted by a rabbit breeder about an hour away, who was committed to taking the rabbit.  She asked if I could meet her husband at the junction where two highways meet, about 10 minutes from our house, which I agreed to.  She said he'd be in a white truck.

Sure enough, he was there at the appointed time in a white SEMI truck.  I pulled over, and a large man got out of the cab (I would never do this in Seattle...only in Iowa).   He inspected the rabbit and told me that the box I had him in was much too big--he had another in his cab--and promptly stuffed the rabbit down the front of his huge winter coat.

The wind was so fierce that it caused my eyes to water, which I assume he took as real tears, because he quickly reassured me, "Ma'am, this bunny is going to a good home.  If you ever want any babies, you just call us up.  We'll take good care of him--he'll be riding with me all day on my route!"  And then he left.

So...we no longer have a bunny.  And I'm totally convinced that this scenario could've taken place only in Iowa.
